What is rug binding?

Carpet binding, usually the least expensive and easiest way to finish a rug's edge, refers to wrapping a strip of fabric around the carpet's edges and stitching it in place with a high-powered sewing machine. You can create custom area rugs or repair a frayed edge of a rug you can't bear to part with.

There's a lot of different colored tapes, so it's easy to find something that matches. However, many designers feel it's to let it thoroughly blend with the rug, rather than using it for contrast; the tape is thin so that the outcome could look odd.

Why is it sometimes called area rug binding?

We often hear of large amounts of leftover pieces when carpeting, especially wall-to-wall, is installed. Waste not! Take those pieces to our rug binding department, and we'll turn them into an area rug. Layer it over a carpet to add some visual interest and fun, not to mention it will make cleaning easier.

One of the biggest reasons to use this service is the problem we all have with getting a stock area rug to fit your space. They come in standard sizes and shapes and, in an ideal world, all rooms would be perfect squares. However, they're not with door sills, baseboards, closets, and moldings with which to contend. Just be very specific on the shape and measurement you need, and we'll do the rest.

Becoming a bit of personal history

Sometimes you have a worn family heirloom that not only has sentimental value but is also too expensive to replace. No problem! Even with holes, our designers can cut around it to salvage a legacy or a rug that's just too expensive to replace. As a result, you'll have a memoir that will always be with you.
